A Mugwump Senator

Regarding your article about Senator Lincoln Chafee in the August 29, 2004 edition of the Journal captioned, “Chafee: Man in the middle”:

A more accurate description of Sen. Lincoln Chafee is that of “mugwump.” In fact, his political career provides the modern definition of mugwumpery!

The problem with being a mugwump is that when one’s wump is hanging over a fence the temptation is to kick it!
